You can spend half a day looking round Ban Nam Khem - and when you get to the Tsunami Memorial by the sea, linger a little in the tranquility. While you are there, have a look at the shops in the memorial gardens. Everything on sale has been made as part of the village's efforts to find new ways of earning a living after the sea crashed over the people and their homes. The shops are operated by tsunami survivors - but they are not looking for sympathy sales. What they have to offer are mostly handmade and the designs are either traditional or their own.
