Kho Koh Khao is an island of beaches off Ban Nam Khem - there are also resorts and, in the season, restaurants. Take time to see the temples and the fruit growing areas. You can get there by motorcycle or car from Khao Lak or Bang Niang.

While in the area see the tsunami memorials at Ban Nam Khem, the worst-hit community in terms of Thais killed. There are: The Tsunami Memorial not far from the pier (spend time walking through it, enjoy the seafront gardens), the Blue Angel and Red Devil boats, and the tsunami cemetery
